Depth perception illusion

By Robin

In the late forties, visual researcher Adelbert Ames Jr. designed a series of visual illusions to demonstrate how the mind forms hypotheses about reality and depth. In one such illusion, Ames tested aspects of depth perception in a specially designed, distorted room.

This Illusion is called an Ames room, the room is skewed larger in one back corner and smaller in the other, when views straight-on the room looks normal except for the fact that the people in it either look like giants or midgets!

You know, whenever I see optical illusions such as this one, I am reminded of how incredible it is that something like 5,000 years ago a man sat under a tree in N India, and figured this out just through thinking. He figured out the mind will only draw conclusions from what it perceives through the senses and what it knows from experience….and VWLA you have an optical illusion!!
Buddhism, whether you believe in it in its entirety, is INCREDIBLE in is scientific qualities!!

This is so neat. There are rooms like this in the Fun-House on Clifton Hill in Niagara Falls, Ont. If anyone is interested in checking them out. Its a pretty fun place. They have distorted rooms just like this one, and other ones built on angels and halls of mirrors and such. =)

I remember going into one of these rooms in a museum as a young boy. You do not get to experience the illusion yourself while inside the room, but it is great fun to see other’s reactions to it!

    eeatyourheartoutt,

I think the time frame of 5,000 years past predates the birth of Buddha and therefore Buddhism. INCREDIBLE indeed but I guess it’s all a matter of perception.
